On the 10th of February, Zeeve invited Manav Darji, who is Blockchain Engineer at Polygon Labs, to discuss the nuances of the topic “Unlocking the True Potential of Blockchain – SCALING.”

Joining Karthik MS (Technical Content Writer, Zeeve) at 7 PM, Manav started answering questions posed by Karthik, beginning with the basics.

Answering the first question regarding the origin of scaling issues, Manav avered the following.

Starting with explaining the know-how of Ethereum, he speaks about how transactions were run smoothly before the scalability issue arose, later giving birth to the trilemma. Taking a couple of examples, Manav avers how Ethereum was bound to scaling issues which paved the way for scaling solutions like Polygon.

In the following answer, he starts speaking about L2 scaling solutions and details how L2 blockchains depend on the design of the L1 blockchains like Ethereum, and the properties of the same, i.e., EVM in this case.

Manav then talks about bridges and rollups and explains the nuances and importance of rollups. How rollups are L2 solutions as well, how they exist on their own on top of L1, and he then describes the differences between a sidechain and an L2 system.

Answering a follow-up question about Sidechains, Manav mentions how Sidechains run entirely independent of Ethereum, whereas rollups provide additional security. He talks about the Ethereum merge, where Ethereum went from PoS to PoW consensus mechanism in 2022, and details on the upcoming update, Proto Dank Sharding.

Talking about non-EVM chains like Aptos, Solana, and others, Manav says it’s a daring undertaking to offer a non-EVM L1 blockchain as it devoids them from the inherent benefits of Ethereum.

Circling back to the trilemma, Manav says that resolving all three problems of decentralization, security, and scalability is not possible. Still, with immense effort, we can come close to achieving it.

Answering the last question of the session, he says Ethereum is a highly reliable blockchain, so users on the chain will certainly increase, paving the way for app-specific rollups in the near future.
