On 18th May 2023, Zeeve held a Twitter AMA session where Karthik MS, Social Media Manager of Zeeve, hosts the session on “The Future of DeFi: Breaking Barriers in Global Financial Markets.” 

This session revolved around the future of decentralized finance (DeFi) and its potential to break barriers in global finance markets. 

Karthik introduced guest speaker  Lakshay Gaur, Blockchain Architect at Zeeve.

Lakshay Gaur emphasizes the key drivers of growth for DeFi in the next five years. While acknowledging recent slow growth due to external factors, he highlights the expanding role of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) beyond art and collectibles.

NFTs are increasingly being adopted for various purposes within the Web 3.0 ecosystem. Lakshay also anticipates a broader adoption of DeFi practices, encompassing NFT trading, tokenized assets, lending platforms, and more.

Additionally, Lakshay stresses the growing demand for interoperability and cross-chain solutions to connect different blockchain networks.

Karthik then shifts the conversation toward the adoption of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) and their role in the financial landscape. 

Lakshay acknowledges the potential for CBDCs to offer more streamlined and direct trade opportunities, which could challenge the dominance of USD-backed stablecoins like USDT and USDC. While these stablecoins might stay in fashion, CBDCs can provide more centralized control and governance over digital currencies.

Addressing why governments are hesitant to embrace blockchain technology for CBDCs fully, Lakshay mentions factors such as control and the learning curve associated with new technologies. He also highlights that CBDCs primarily target businesses and individual owners rather than direct consumer markets.

When considering how DeFi can enhance financial market efficiency and transparency, Lakshay points out the inherent advantages of blockchain and smart contracts. These include eliminating intermediaries, enabling 24/7 market access, reducing transfer times, and ensuring transparency through publicly auditable smart contracts. 

He emphasizes that DeFi can revolutionize financial services by providing more accessible, efficient, and transparent solutions.

To promote financial inclusion and sustainability through DeFi, Lakshay discusses its potential to offer global financial services to unbanked and underbanked populations. 

DeFi platforms can provide individuals with internet access and a smartphone with the ability to participate in various financial activities, such as lending, borrowing, and investing. Additionally, blockchain’s transparency and immutability can support sustainability initiatives by creating a more accountable and efficient framework for projects like crop insurance.

Despite the promising potential of DeFi, Lakshay also highlights potential risks associated with the ecosystem. One significant risk lies in the open-source nature of smart contracts, which can be exploited by malicious actors who identify vulnerabilities in the code. To mitigate this risk, Lakshay suggests third-party audits of smart contracts to identify and address potential security flaws.

Karthik concludes the conversation by addressing regulatory challenges in DeFi. The importance of mobile adoption is emphasized, as it would make DeFi more accessible to a broader range of users, similar to the growth experienced by traditional financial apps after their mobile adoption.

Regarding regulatory challenges, Lakshay acknowledges difficulties in taxing DeFi transactions and the anonymity of users. He suggests implementing governing frameworks on top of smart contracts to address tax-related challenges and better algorithms for staking platforms to ensure a fair and balanced consensus mechanism.
